Renovation of Historic Military Housing
GMH Inc.:
Ft. Story, VA
Ft. Hamilton, NY
Ft. Bliss, TX
Walter Reed Amry Medial Center

Under their long term leases for military housing, GMH has undertaken to renovate historic housing at various military bases across the country. MEC works with John Cullinane Associates, Architects and Preservation Planners, to provide construction documents that reflect a sensitivity to the special needs of historic structures.

In most cases, new HVAC systems are installed, and electrical service is upgraded. All exposed wiring and conduit is removed, and the structure is completely re-wired in cases where original cloth-insulated wiring is found. New systems are designed to cause as little change or damage to the existing envelope and architectural features as possible. Below are two examples of houses for which MEC has designed new MEP systems.

The “Cape Henry House” at Ft. Story, VA, served as a weather observation station for many years. The top floor housed instruments, and a balcony at each corner made outdoor observation of the weather possible in all directions.
This “Spanish Eclectic” style house at Ft. Bliss, TX, dates from the early 1900's.
